Programme design through the metaverse and generative AI
In today’s large universities, teaching techniques are mostly standardised and not tailored to individual learners’ aptitude and learning abilities.
While conventional digital learning platforms do have the advantage of letting learners work through them at their own pace, a 360-degree, metaverse solution is not only richer and more immersive but has the capability to engage the learner further, again at their own pace.
In a study (Zhao et al., 2022) conducted in China to understand the learning experience through metaverse, it was found that learners’ emotional input and cognitive level were enhanced through technology convergence to create innovative learning environments.
According to IMD Business School, the metaverse with AI will speed up hyperpersonalisation due to machine learning from interactions in the metaverse space, thus making it refined and precise and increasing adaptation and engagement.
In an article by Rodriguez & Kanan, 2023 AI-powered virtual assistants would personalise learning through customised UI, assessment systems and learning, taking into account learners’ emotional state, according to Pradhan & Mbohwa, 2023.
When the metaverse is powered by generative AI, we can provide students with previously unheard-of learning opportunities. Students can experience individualised, captivating, and immersive situations firsthand through lifelike virtual worlds, simulations, and characters. They can develop and practice tough-to-cultivate skills, immerse themselves in new cultures and languages, and learn to succeed in challenging fields—all without fear of real-world repercussions.
Metaverse, along with GenAI, is, therefore, the next frontier of education. Universities such as Frisk University, South Dakota State, Kansas University, etc., have already started developing Metaversities, which are digital twin campuses of the Universities having virtual classrooms and delivery (Paykamian,2022).
