Remembering Michael Osbaldeston and his lasting impact on management education

Michael Osballdeston

It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to our esteemed colleague and friend, Michael Osbaldeston, former Director of Quality Services and EQUIS at EFMD, and a committed advocate of EDAF.

A distinguished peer reviewer and chair within our community, he conducted 33 EQUIS reviews and chaired 18 of them, always with insight, care, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Michael’s career reflected his lifelong dedication to advancing management education worldwide. As Director of Cranfield School of Management from 2003 to 2009 and previously Chief Executive of Ashridge Business School, he led institutions that shaped generations of leaders.

His tenure as Head of Global Learning at Shell International further underscored his commitment to connecting academic excellence with real-world business practice. His influence extended well beyond the United Kingdom through advisory roles with business schools in France, Portugal, Norway, and South Africa. He was a member of multiple international advisory boards and an active advocate for collaboration and innovation in management education.

At EFMD, Michael first served as a member of the EFMD Board before joining the organisation as Director of Quality Services and EQUIS. His vision and leadership helped strengthen the EQUIS system and expand the organisation’s global reach.

Through his guidance, countless institutions were supported in their journey towards continuous improvement and global recognition. His work contributed to the enhancement of educational standards and to the understanding of internationalisation in higher education.

Colleagues around the world will remember Michael for his distinguished intellect, elegant manner, and inspiring counsel. His professionalism was matched by humanity and warmth, qualities that earned him respect and affection across our network.

Awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2008 for services to national and international higher education, Michael’s legacy will continue through the many people and institutions he inspired.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go to his family, his many friends, and the schools he supported with such dedication.
