From learning to lasting impact: What we learned at EFMD’s Masterclass

EFMD Masterclass

“How do we demonstrate that learning really changes the business?”

That question brought together 22 learning and development professionals for EFMD’s Learning Impact Masterclass—a hands-on journey that turned theory into practice.

Over several months, participants moved from eLearning modules and a lively virtual classroom in May to peer coaching and final use case presentations in September. Guided by Steven Smith, EFMD’s Senior Advisor for Learning Impact, they tackled one shared challenge: showing how learning drives measurable results.

A Journey from insight to evidence

Each participant developed a real-world use case from their own organisation. Using EFMD’s Results Chain Framework, they mapped the story from business challenge to learning outcomes to real impact.

One memorable use case came from the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), where a driver training programme didn’t just upskill employees—it cut fuel consumption by 30%, improved safety, and reduced emissions. Another case linked leadership development directly to stronger succession pipelines and retention rates.

Across all the stories, a pattern emerged:

  • The most powerful programmes were strategically aligned to business goals.
  • Stakeholders became co-creators, not just spectators.
  • Data and evidence replaced assumptions.

A shift in mindset

By the end of the journey, participants didn’t just know how to measure impact—they saw learning as an asset to be capitalised, not a cost to be justified.

As one facilitator said, “When you tell your story through data and impact, learning earns its seat at the business table.”

About the Masterclass

The EFMD Master Class on Learning Impact examines why Learning and Development often struggles to demonstrate measurable value to the organisation. Research by Watershed identifies competing priorities and limited data access as key barriers, yet the true differentiator lies in mindset—specifically, aligning learning initiatives with organisational goals.

Designed for L&D practitioners from EFMD member companies and invited guests, this virtual Master Class introduces the Results Chain Framework, which links inputs, outputs, outcomes, and impact to ensure that learning strategies deliver meaningful business results. Participants apply the framework to a real project, creating a practical learning impact case that reinforces the theory through direct application. A digital badge is awarded upon successful completion.
