University of St. Gallen (HSG)
The University of St.Gallen (HSG), founded in 1898, is one of Europe’s leading business schools. Located in St.Gallen, Switzerland, it offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in management, economics, law, social sciences, and international affairs. HSG is renowned for its research excellence and strong ties to the global business community, fostering a unique blend of academic rigour and practical relevance.
The university emphasises interdisciplinary education, combining business studies with legal, social, and cultural insights. HSG is committed to sustainable development, innovation, and shaping future leaders who will contribute responsibly to society and the economy. The campus environment, modern infrastructure, and vibrant student life make it a hub for intellectual growth and networking opportunities.
HSG is a public Business University that delivers high education through a six-school structure: the schools of Management, Finance, Economics and Political Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Computer Science, and the Law School. The Schools employ 107 full professors and are the gatekeepers of the University’s mission of teaching, executive education, and research.
Expanding impact through innovation and sustainability
Alongside its school structure, there are over 40 research Institutes which, based on the expertise of their leaders and their teams, contribute heavily to the scientific community and the creation of knowledge. One of these, the School of Medicine, operates as a special purpose vehicle as it co-owns the joint medical master’s programme in collaboration with the University of Zurich.
Today, the University enjoys a very prestigious position, being tripled accredited and ranked 6th in the Financial Times European Business School Rankings. It has almost 10,000 students, but this does not include those who study in executive education programmes (almost another 1,800 learners).
The BSIS peer review team commended the university’s outstanding integration of CSR and sustainable development into its strategy and activities. By leveraging its international reputation in sustainable development, the university has the opportunity to further enhance its national image.
The review highlights the university’s substantial and multidimensional impact, both within the region and beyond, and encourages the institution to fully embrace its role as an ambassador for the city and region. By recognising and capitalising on the broader influence of its staff and students, the university can extend its impact even further beyond the scientific community and regional stakeholders.
Manuel Ammann, President of the University of St.Gallen, commented:
“Through the BSIS assessment process at the University of St.Gallen, we have received invaluable insights from external experts. Their feedback has spotlighted our strengths and offered concrete suggestions for boosting our regional, intellectual, and societal impact further. While the results are positive, the suggestions received will be crucial as we finalise the university’s revised strategy 2030+, with a key focus on transferring our expertise into real-world impact for our stakeholders. A big thank you to BSIS and the peer experts for their dedication to our university.”
About BSIS
The Business School Impact System (BSIS) is the first comprehensive impact assessment tool for business schools, covering more than 130 indicators across seven dimensions of impact. It provides a tailor-made data collection system for monitoring, assessing, and developing the impact of business schools.
The BSIS process involves the definition of the impact zone and institutional scope, data collection, impact assessment, and the report with recommendations for future development. Demonstrating the school’s impact on internal and external stakeholders, the system serves as a communication and negotiation tool externally and fosters an impact culture within the school. Schools that undergo BSIS are awarded the BSIS label for a three-year period.
- There are currently more than 80 schools across 20 countries that have received the BSIS label.
